Another fine collaboration with Greenscape Landscape for the 2014 Spokane Home Show creating a garden experience inspired by elements of Japanese design – shelter, stone, water and beautiful plants.
The central feature of our garden is a rustic arbor constructed of repurposed telephone poles. Shaded from harsh sun and lightly enclosed with an open air wall made of reused windows and rebar wainscoting the patio becomes an inviting outdoor room for gathering. A polished granite table furnishes the patio with a fiery focal point.
Freeze-resistant Asian pottery brings year-round color and raises plants to elevated status. One especially dramatic pot overflows into a shallow pool animated with live koi. Flagstone and boulders break through one end of the rectangular pond to provide cover and a perch for wildlife.
Japanese Maples and Bamboo add a fine-textured grace to the plant palette and generous plantings of lily turf, sweet flag and ferns soften the patio edges. Accents of forsythia and blooming hellebores bring a touch of flower color but the real show stealers are a mix of tender and hardy succulents colonizing a shallow ceramic boat.
Finding comfort and delight in nature are underlying desires in the creation of many home gardens. I invite you to further explore the possibilities of thoughtful design in your garden with Barbara Safranek Design.
